New learning and teaching methods and approaches

Objectives

We wanted to make the course more interesting for our students by applying new effective teaching methods (CLIL and PBL) which combined with the use of the English language would make the teaching act more attractive. We aimed to improve their participation in daily classroom tasks and increase their student performance. We also wanted to improve the quality of the overall educational services provided by our organization.

Background

Our school employs students from a variety of cultural backgrounds with their main characteristic being the difficulty of adapting to school life and the low degree of participation in the educational activities of their department. The students are difficult to mobilize, participate sluggishly in the lesson and consequently their performance is low. The teachers of the school, who have a long experience and the ability to handle various pedagogical issues, declared in their majority their readiness to apply new teaching techniques in order to improve the degree of participation of their students. Recognizing the need to train its staff in new, effective teaching techniques, our school decided to involve a group of its teachers in an educational activity abroad entitled 'Application of CLIL and Project methods to improve student participation' in order to acquire that knowledge and the skills shared with the rest of the staff would lead to the restoration of the reduced participation of students in the course as well as to the introduction of innovations for the continuous improvement of its educational services.
