Objectives

By implementing the project, we sought to achieve three objectives: the cultivation of our students' literacy in terms of the reception of works of art, the creative expression of their concerns in small artistic projects and the development of their political reflection and democratic attitude through the arts. We thought that linking art and political education would be extremely beneficial in empowering our students in terms of attitudes and skills.

Background

The 2nd Gymnasium of Kavala is a public secondary school. Apart from the lessons offered within the curriculum, various learning activities are implemented, such as emotional education, literacy, creative writing and eTwinning projects. Our school carries out Educational Excursions to various parts of Greece as well as to the Greek Parliament. In recent years it has implemented Erasmus+ projects (Actions KA1 and KA2) with a variety of themes. However, like all secondary schools in the country, under the pressure of the volume of knowledge provided and a strict mechanism for evaluating school performance, our school enjoys limited autonomy in the formulation of the curriculum. This European development project sought to engage students with the arts, either as critical readers of artworks or as creators. Involving our students in the project activities activated their thinking, helped them to observe their environment, explore various aspects of social issues, argue and negotiate their views.
