Objectives

Two objectives of this programme were pursued. Firstly, the creation of an inclusive environment with zero tolerance to violence, by strengthening the capacity of all involved in the educational process for intercultural dialogue and overcoming prejudices between native and foreign pupils, by tackling the racist phenomena that our educational institution has experienced in recent years. Our ultimate goal was to address the challenge of the smooth social integration of pupils of different nationalities and the constant desire of our school to provide a holistic education for all children, where everyone will coexist and interact creatively. The second objective was to cultivate an extroversion of our school, to cooperate and network with European schools and educational institutions to improve our educational work. We considered this objective particularly crucial because the long-term inversion of our school weakened us as an educational organisation, depriving us of educational opportunities, opportunities for exchanges, transfers of good practices, training, activities, strategic partnerships and, in general, creating the conditions for development.

Background

Our organization is a general high school in the island province, which in recent years has faced major challenges in overcoming its inversion, as well as in managing the growing heterogeneity of student potential. The programme we implemented was aimed at addressing these needs, i.e. opening up the school to the outside world, on the one hand, and adopting and implementing mediation strategies and inclusive practices, through the training of educational staff, on the other. Teachers have had the opportunity to acquire essential knowledge and skills on issues related to diversity and its parameters and are now interculturally ready to respond daily to the changing social needs of the school and local society. At the same time this programme has given us the unique opportunity to break the chronic inversion affecting our school and to launch a new period with an extrovert perspective. Travel abroad, contacts with the training provider before and after mobility, the training process itself, have been transformative for the participants and for the whole of our organization.
