The objectives of the project focused on: a) the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices characterising a "Sustainable School" which integrates the principles of sustainability in all school aspects, i.e. administration, teaching & learning processes, resource management, commuting to and from school and its relationship not only with the school but also the wider community, b) the acquisition of cognitive, technical, communication and critical thinking skills concerning modern media use (media literacy) and secure web browsing, specifically, raising participants’ awareness of digital responsibilities, personal data protection, online misinformation, fake news, harmful content, hate speech, cyberbullying, digital fraud and teaching them ways in which each one can contribute to a healthy and safe internet environment, and c) the promotion of active participation and networking in a democratic culture
The idea for this project has stemmed from new challenges such as: a) the need for flexible digital ways of education and communication created by the increased demand for teachers' and students’ digital skills, the information overload, fake news/misinformation etc. in the digital and media world posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the fulfilment of which is a European priority and which are absent from both formal and informal school curriculum, b) the increasing environmental problems - the waste of natural resources, air pollution, climate change, etc. - that are basically social ones and require solutions and interventions from the grassroots, even at a local but also school level. However, we have found out that there is lack of environmental culture and relevant practice application, skills and knowledge of the full exploitation of digital technologies as well as the responsible and critical use and production of media in our school too.
