Objectives

to raise awareness about environmental problems to highlight the fact that irresponsible management has created the environmental issues that we are facing now to educate the students on ways to prevent deterioration of the environment as individuals to explore ways to reverse the damage created to the environment to highlight ways with which different countries are dealing with the situation to emphasise the fact that countries are not alone in this and that one country’s problems affect the others as well, therefore mutual agreements need to be made and common action needs to be taken. to teach the students that as members of the european family we have common goals and mutual interests and that the EU provides the platform for collaboration, negotiation and problem solving to acquaint the students with the cultures of different countries and to point out that we have more in common than they anticipated to expose them to an environment where they could use and improve their foreign language skills to demonstrate the idea that there are no borders within the EU, should they choose to explore what a future would be like outside Greece

Background

32 Geniko Lykeio has been participating in Erasmus+ projects since 2015. It is the second time we have chosen a programme with an environmental content due to the emphasis we place on environmental education. We are a school built in an urban area and we experience the consequences of urbanisation and the resulting degradation of the environment, such as heavy traffic, pollution and noise. Additionally, despite efforts being made for correct disposal of trash, that is recycling of plastic and paper, we feel that students need more encouragement and training to make the extra effort towards recycling and protecting their environment in any possible way. We were also focused on teaching them ways to avoid waste, be it waste of water, waste of materials, waste of food etc. and making them understand that the sources we depend on for our livelihood are not infinite and that individual action is equally (if not more) important with centralised government action.
