Objectives

The Lewis Method to Deep Democracy is suitable for classroom / lab conflict management, building and enhancing the classroom culture and creating a peaceful learning environment where everyone has a voice and feels truly free to express their feelings based on mutual respect. In this way a democratic spirit will be created, there will be mutual respect, understanding, while the students will show empathy. All this will contribute on building good and healthy relationships between students and creating a good and collaborative educational climate.

Background

Upon returning after a long period of abstinence from lifelong learning, there was an increase in conflict situations in our school. Individual differences (age, experiences, etc.) together with the current socio-economic situation, the pandemic and the psychological consequences, constantly cause conflicts, inside and outside the classes, which often lead to violent situations that are not compatible with the a democratic spirit that education life should have, and which we teachers are obliged to manage. In order to manage our classroom we need to master effective methods to identify the different needs of each of our students that will help us to mitigate their diversity within the classroom, to act democratically and impartially and, finally, to help them resolve their conflict.
