Objectives

As members of the educational community of our school we wanted to offer quality and effective education to our students, while strengthening our European identity. The basic need was the application of innovative teaching methods in order to organize dynamic learning environments, to make teaching more effective and attractive and to improve student performance, in order to limit school dropouts. Also, our goal was to implement a modern student-centered teaching model, focusing on strengthening social skills. We are convinced that creating new dynamic learning environments will help students to be actively involved in the learning process. Our next goal was to strengthen the digital skills of adult students. We believe that teaching with the help of digital media will help them to familiarize themselves with new technologies, to integrate them into their daily lives, strengthening digital intelligence. Another goal was to modernize and strengthen the European dimension of our school, so that it could be renewed, testing techniques from other schools abroad, redefining or modifying teaching methods.

Background

The 4th Vocational High School is the only Evening EPAL in the regional unit of Heraklion and offers 6 Sections and 18 modern specialties. It is one of the most populous schools in the country and the only High School in Crete that has a Refugee Reception Department. In addition, it is a school that has demonstrated great social work at various levels. However, one of the main characteristics of the school is the heterogeneity of the student body, as it consists of adult and minor students with different social, economic and cognitive backgrounds. This results in students' low performance, frustration, lack of self-confidence and ultimately school dropout. The content of the project was the training of teachers in the new technologies in order to utilize them, in order to make teaching more attractive and efficient, by extension modernizing the school unit and creating a school that will form intellectually mature and critically thinking citizens.
