Objectives

"You Dont Fool Me!" is a youth exchange that took place in Thassos, Greece 17-26/10/2022. 42 young participants were (+6 leaders) from Greece, Latvia, Italy, Spain, Germany and Finland. We discussed and shared good practices on how to avoid fake news and disinformation. The issue of disinformation and particularly fake news have lately become infamously popular in the world: fake news even scored as one of the most used new expressions of the year 2017 (Collins Dictionary). It has a huge power to change how young people think, behave and feel. Especially nowadays with COVID situation, fake news was all around the web spreading panic to the European societies and found youth unprepared in a difficult situation.Although the notion of fake news and disinformation dates back many tens of centuries, in the 21st century it has acquired a new powerful tool–the internet, that made it even more influential and encompassing.Social networks and social messaging have even further enhanced the spread of fake news. The groups most susceptible to falling for fake news are seniors and Youth. In our project You Don't Fool Me! We aimed to help young participants learn how to improve their skills in recognising disinformation from facts, manipulation from objective reality and developing their critical thinking. The EU is founded on universal values like freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and yet many of these essential values get downtrodden everyday by the unscrupulous manipulators. Europeans can do better and especially the young ones can lead by example. They just needed the proper knowledge, useful tips and practiced sensitivity to disinformation and manipulation. The project aims were to increase their knowledge in this area,it seeks to help them define the major notions and comprehend them, understand the implications of fake news and disinformation in real life, and recognise the disparate forms disinformation can take. Participants learned about the methods of how to debunk fake news and how to counter them. During various thematic workshops we used different approaches, techniques, NFL methods to get participants more involved about the main topic of the project exchange- disinformation, fake news and manipulation. Daily feedback received from the participants themselves served as an important guidance tool for our customisation of workshops and teaching processes to fully develop their potential and grasp the chosen project’s subject matters. Project objectives were : - to provide the proper explanation in basic terms while illustrating them on concrete examples (of fake news) - to find various implications fake and manipulating information has over people, for what purposes it can be used, discuss how it disturbs the relations among people and what emotions it raises (building the complex picture for participants) - to illustrate multiple ways how the disinformation and manipulation can be countered – include the participants in active problem-solving - to illustrate the national insights into the issue of fake news, disinformation or propaganda in participants home countries and how the problem of disinformation is dealt with by the EU and some other institutions or NGOs - to use educational online and offline games as an important means to boost learning about difficult subject matter (the importance of modernising education is properly taken into account) - to use individual creativity of project participants in creating original visual expressions of fake news (what does it mean for them, what do they understand as the most important threat of disinformation, manipulation or propaganda) - T-shirt painting (pictures/logos), badges creation, comics designing, video production and other – the activity should help building deeper understanding of the issue and developing stronger feeling for justice and the value of objective facts and reality - to explore with participants the basic rules of critical thinking - to improve the participants soft skills, argumentation, employment of useful techniques in interaction with persons with totally opposite opinions (possible influenced by fake news) – how to interact with them, how to debunk myths in real life conversations - to provide international environment and intercultural understanding, mutual enrichment, incentivise the cooperation of the young people coming from various backgrounds - to let participants discover more about the Erasmus+ and its opportunities so they will be able to profit from it in the future, be more active and also inform, inspire others, additionally we would like to spark their interest in volunteering, abroad and broaden their mind, boost their employability and increase their professional as well as social skills - to promote European universal values.
