Objectives

In a world characterized by diverse identities and cultures, achieving justice and equality remains a significant challenge. Despite progress, gender inequality persists across different societies. Within the European Union (EU), disparities in gender equality continue, with women often having fewer opportunities compared to men. This inequality is evident in areas such as employment, where women have lower participation rates and earnings than their male counterparts. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified existing challenges, leading to an increase in gender-based violence and highlighting the urgency of concerted efforts to address these issues. The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) was established to monitor, analyze, and promote gender equality within the EU. The Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 further underscores the commitment to achieving gender equality in various areas, including employment and decision-making. However, despite these initiatives, the EU scores only 68 out of 100 on the Gender Equality Index, indicating room for significant improvement. Recognising the importance of grassroots involvement and education, Learning Seed, a Non-Formal Education and civil society organisation located in from Argos, Argolis, initiated the "Mind the Gap: Understanding of Gender Equality" project. This project aims to raise awareness among youth about gender inequalities and equip them with the knowledge and skills to foster a fairer society. Through dialogue, challenging stereotypes, and promoting inclusivity, the project seeks to empower young people to become change-makers within their communities. The "Mind the Gap: Understanding of Gender Equality" project has both generic and specific objectives. The generic objectives include increasing participants' knowledge and awareness of gender-related principles and supporting the implementation of the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 through non-formal education methodologies tailored for youth. This approach aims to translate policy objectives into actionable strategies and practical solutions at the grassroots level, enhancing the relevance, accessibility, and effectiveness of gender equality education for young people. Specific objectives focus on encouraging dialogue among youth to challenge gender stereotypes, facilitating interpersonal communication to discuss gender equality issues, increasing awareness of gender inequities within communities, and educating participants about the prevalence of gender inequality within their countries and the EU. The project also aims to introduce a new language vocabulary that is inclusive and respectful of diverse gender identities and experiences, and to equip participants with the knowledge and resources to take action on gender equality through networking and collaboration. The "Mind the Gap: Understanding of Gender Equality" project represents a critical initiative aimed at empowering youth to address gender inequality through education and dialogue. By equipping young people with the necessary knowledge and skills to advocate for equality, the project contributes to building a more inclusive and equitable society. Through collaborative efforts and grassroots engagement, we can strive toward a future where gender parity is not only a goal but a reality for all.
