Objectives

The DemocrART project was designed in order to address some important changes that have been observed in our modern societies especially after the COVID19 Pandemic. More specifically, the project aimed to reflect on the social crisis and the levels of active engagement and participation European citizens and especially youth. The ever-growing incidents of racism, discriminatory and exclusion phenomena as well as events of corruption, backsliding, and inequality seem to have affected not only the resilience and strength of democratic institutions, but also young people and citizens’ trust in democratic governance, procedures and institutions. In this context, we aimed to make it easier for people across the EU to share their thoughts, experiences, and concerns in order to help young people understand the fundamentals of democracy and raise awareness of values like respect, equality, and solidarity that are essential for the rebirth of our societies. In this effort, we decided to add the aspect of artistic expression as an added value promoting acceptance, diversity and freedom of expression that is cultivated by our creativity. More specifically, DemocrART project included a Youth Exchange activity which gathered young people from 5 different countries and managed through a series of informal and non-formal training sessions and creative workshops, to strengthen young participants' awareness of concepts like equality, pluralism, freedom, participation, etc. Additionally, the project succeeded in facilitating the young participants’ understanding the terminology used in policy documents, publications, news stories, and conversations regarding democracy and the European Union, and developing knowledge of concepts like democracy and the values of the European Union. Moreover, the project aimed at improving participants' skills, participation in civic life, and social interaction, while also promoting diversity and inclusion through instruction in democratic principles thus contributing to the strengthening of democratic resistance. Finally, through the democratic aspect of the project, the young participants focused on their expressive abilities, sparked their tendency to the arts and cultivated their cultural interests and creative mind. In the overall spirit of promoting beneficial and positive habits, behaviours and mindsets, while also keeping in mind the ERASMUS+ objectives and framework, we aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge and abilities necessary to take part in solidarity and volunteer efforts for human rights, as well as to be the next generation of democratic agents in their communities promoting the values that hold the European Union “united in diversity”.
