Objectives

The objectives of our project were to address the needs of our bilingual program identified through the SWOT analysis carried out for this purpose. Among them were: - To provide our students with greater input and exposure to the foreign language (English) in a natural context (English-speaking country) to improve their oral comprehension and expression by facing everyday situations where the use of English was essential. - Both the English teachers and the teachers of Non-Linguistic Subjects (DNLs) needed to update and/or improve their level of English to apply the CLIL methodology with confidence and fluency in their classes. - To enhance the training of teachers in the Bilingual Program (English and DNLs) in CLIL, through courses that combined theoretical and practical training, to provide them with the necessary knowledge to create or adapt materials and apply the CLIL methodology confidently in their classes. - To improve the daily use and mastery of ICT, essential after the pandemic and a constant challenge for many teachers. - To continue working on environmental awareness and conservation projects with real and applicable impact on the daily lives of our students.

Background

IES El Astillero is a public bilingual high school located in El Astillero, a city of approximately 18,000 inhabitants located 7km from Santander, in the north of the province of Cantabria. Our school offers the following levels of education: Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) with a bilingual program in English, based on the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology, which includes the departments of Geography and History, Music, Art, Technology, Computer Science, and Physical Education. Baccalaureate in the Humanities (2 lines), Sciences (2 lines), and one group in Social Sciences. Currently, it also has a bilingual program in 1st and 2nd year of Baccalaureate, which has been implemented during the courses 2022-23 and 2023-24. The ages of our students range from 12 to 16 years old (1st to 4th year of ESO) and from 16 to 18 years old (2 years of Baccalaureate). The profile of our students is mostly of medium socio-economic level, with around 10% coming from a medium-low socio-economic level. Specifically, in the courses involved in this project: 3rd and 4th year of ESO and 1st year of Baccalaureate, there are 4 students with specific needs at risk of exclusion due to socio-economic disadvantage.
