Objectives

The objectives set were: To promote wider engagement of older adults in green practices: we wanted to promote a more nuanced understanding of older adults’ activism by considering the different contexts and challenges they face. Our aim was to inspire and empower older adults to actively participate in environmental initiatives and adopt sustainable behaviours. To support adult educators and education centres: we wanted to support them to improve their practices in the field of environmental education for older adults. This included providing resources, training and guidance to equip them with the tools they need to effectively engage older adults in environmental issues and activities. To strengthen the role of older adults in participating in environmental initiatives and as active members of the community. By empowering older adults to participate in environmental activities, we aimed to strengthen their voice, action and influence in addressing environmental issues.

Background

The motivation came from a clear need identified by all partners to address the lack of involvement of older adults in environmental activism and the adoption of sustainable behaviours. Although the European Union's Green Deal emphasises the importance of a sustainable future, older adults have been largely overlooked in these efforts, even though they are heavily affected by climate change. The needs we wanted to address were: Isolation and discrimination: we have created inclusive spaces and opportunities for older adults to engage in environmental activities and reduce feelings of isolation and discrimination. Lack of skills: providing older adults with the necessary tools and knowledge to understand the facts of climate change, the risks and the opportunities for sustainable living. This includes empowering them to develop sustainable life plans and prepare for major environmental changes. Limited awareness among adult educators and organisations: we are improving it by providing training and resources on the impact of climate change on older adults, strategies for incorporation green practices, and training staff to incorporate environmental considerations into their activities.
