Background

Caxato was born out of a common interest in improving the quality of life of older adults through education. The ageing of the population is a long-term trend that started several decades ago in Europe. This trend is visible in the changes in the age structure of the population and is reflected in the increase in the proportion of older people together with a decrease in the proportion of people of working age in the population as a whole. The ageing of the population, increasing longevity and the necessary quality of life is a challenge that will become more acute in the coming years. In addition, the situation of uncertainty and questioning of European values of coexistence, call for actions that consolidate a (pro)active citizenship with its environment and the most vulnerable communities. Caxato was conceived as a proposal of active ageing, in all its meaning, where older adults become protagonists of their training and actors of the educational processes. It focuses its value on the participants, on the development of their skills and contributions to the construction of a global European citizenship through the heritage of the Camino de Santiago.
