Objectives

The project was designed to generate a significant educational, social and community impact on students and their environment. It aimed to foster the inclusion of children from disadvantaged backgrounds through their participation in basketball teams and extracurricular activities (O1), and to promote innovative education by integrating sport, technology, science and art as complementary disciplines to better understand and live alongside others (O2). Another key objective was to promote holistic education both inside and outside the school environment, through coordinated support involving teachers, coaches, students and families (O3). The project also sought to strengthen the sense of community at local, national and European levels through the Cokrea platform and face-to-face encounters during international tournaments (O4). The development of soft skills was a central pillar: alongside English and mathematics, priority was given to teamwork, empathy, decision-making and responsibility through sports practice (O5). Finally, the project aimed to contribute to educational transformation through collaboration among schools, families, clubs and organisations, promoting a shared and global approach to education (O6).

Background

The project originated from a proposal by CBS (P4), which was shared with the Tekhné Chair (P1) and the Municipality of Salt. Through this joint work, the idea gradually evolved into the foundation of BaskEUball, moving from a local initiative to a European-scale action driven by a consortium committed to social inclusion, pedagogical innovation and community-based work. Its development responded to a clearly identified need in the participating schools: to improve the inclusion of students in vulnerable situations, particularly those with a migrant or refugee background or belonging to minority groups, while avoiding segregation dynamics that negatively affect their learning and well-being. Given the high concentration of students with fewer educational opportunities, it was considered essential to implement strategies to ensure a holistic education both during and beyond school hours. In addition, the project sought to foster interaction among children from different socio-economic backgrounds through participation in basketball clubs and extracurricular activities, promoting cultural exchange, community cohesion and values such as respect, cooperation and a shared sense of identity.
