“Taking Green Steps” was the initiative of a group of young volunteers from AJ Inter, motivated by their concerns about sustainable development in Jerez. They were concerned about issues such as litter in parks, food waste at home and in restaurants, clothing waste, and reckless consumption, among other things, and the impact this had on the city and the environment. It is the continuation of a solidarity project funded by the European Solidarity Corps program, entitled “Green Jerez,” which took place in Jerez in 2022. This project marked the starting point for taking action at the local level, encouraging and inspiring sustainable practices that work well in the daily lives of young people. They were clear that it is important to take action today to achieve a more sustainable future. Considering that every person in society has a need to consume, consumer behavior has a huge impact on increasing or decreasing pollution. Therefore, in this project, we wanted to focus on identifying good practices that we could implement in our daily lives to raise awareness, protect our planet, and develop equal prosperity for all human beings. In addition to understanding the political framework where decisions affecting citizens and the environment are made, we also wanted to understand the current European policies regarding youth and sustainable development. We selected four groups from different countries to learn about the situation in each country and city, and to compare and learn from each other from different parts of Europe: Turkey, Romania, North Macedonia, and Italy. Each group came from a different background: urban, rural, and mountainous areas. Specific objectives of Taking Green Steps: Empower young people to act as agents of change for the environment and sustainable development. Learn together about the EU Youth Strategy as a framework for cooperation on EU youth policies and the EU Youth Goal: A Sustainable Green Europe. Promote more sustainable habits (such as encouraging local production and reusing and repairing habits). Promote intercultural learning among participants through creativity. Foster friendship, creativity, self-esteem, and empowerment among young people. Create a video about sustainable development measures we can implement ourselves, based on participants' suggestions, to be shared on social media.
