The project Violence2theBench: Preventing sexist violence through sports, carried out between June 2022 and January 2023 under the Erasmus+ programme (KA152-YOU), was designed as an initiative to prevent gender-based violence through sports practice and the promotion of gender equality among European youth. Coordinated by Club Deportivo Handbol Muro d'Alcoi and implemented in collaboration with partner organisations from Bulgaria, Romania, Italy, Latvia, Portugal and the Netherlands, the project brought together a total of 35 participants, of whom 27 were identified as young people with fewer opportunities (12 facing economic barriers and 15 facing geographical barriers). The project was based on a two-fold diagnosis. First, the acknowledgement that gender-based violence remains a persistent issue in European societies, as evidenced by data from agencies such as the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights or the European Parliament itself. Second, the recognition of sport as a powerful tool for social transformation, capable of transmitting values such as equality, respect, teamwork, and inclusion. From this foundation, the general objective of the project was to raise awareness among European youth about gender-based violence, promoting attitudes of equality and female empowerment through sport, using a methodology rooted in non-formal education, intercultural exchange and active participation. Based on this overall goal, the following specific objectives were defined: To combat gender-based violence, discriminatory practices and gender stereotypes through sport, understood as a universal language that enables the questioning of traditional roles and the visibility of positive female role models. To deepen participants’ understanding of the concepts of gender equality and gender-based violence, particularly in the context of sport, through critical reflection, case analysis and participatory workshops. To enhance the social and civic competences of participants, strengthening their leadership abilities, critical thinking skills, and sense of initiative in the field of social justice. To promote values such as equality, leadership, and teamwork as core elements of female empowerment in sport, through practical activities, direct observation of sporting events and interaction with high-level female athletes. To foster female inclusion in political, participatory and social life by using sport as a common thread, emphasising the importance of making women visible not only as athletes but also as managers, leaders, and decision-makers. To promote diversity, European values, and awareness of the Erasmus+ programme, cultivating a sense of shared European identity among participants and reinforcing intercultural cohesion between partner countries. The project’s implementation in Lorcha (Alicante, Spain) also helped reinforce links with rural areas and with young people who are often excluded from international mobility opportunities, thus supporting a perspective of territorial equity. A safe environment for learning and coexistence was fostered, where all activities (workshops, group dynamics, visits, debates, meetings with sports professionals, etc.) were accessible, inclusive and culturally sensitive. All participants were actively involved, regardless of their previous experience or language skills, with specific support measures to ensure effective inclusion. The project was supported by a strong network of organisations experienced in youth work, gender equality and sport. These organisations were selected not only for their geographical and cultural diversity, but also for their strong commitment to the thematic goals of the initiative. All partners played an active role in identifying, selecting and supporting participants, paying special attention to the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities. Ultimately, Violence2theBench succeeded in equipping young people across Europe with tools to understand, question and transform gender inequalities in their environments, using sport as a catalyst for change. The project strengthened the role of youth as agents of social transformation and highlighted the potential of international cooperation to generate sustainable impacts in values such as equality, justice and social cohesion.
