The project "Empowering Youth through ESC projects" aims to increase the quality and quantity of youth volunteering activities in ecovillages and other sustainable projects, offering volunteers a rich learning opportunity on the four dimensions of sustainability (ecological, social, economic and cultural), promoting active citizenship as well as values such as tolerance, solidarity, inclusion of diversity and respect. The project consists of a training and networking event for youth workers to enable participants and participating organisations to successfully implement high quality international youth volunteering activities through the European Solidarity Corps. All partners in this project work in the field of education for sustainable development and most of them are related to ecovillages. An ecovillage is an intentional or traditional community that is consciously designed through locally owned participatory processes to regenerate social and natural environments. The four dimensions of sustainability (ecological, economic, social and cultural) are integrated in a holistic approach. Ecovillages are models of sustainable settlements that serve as training and learning centres where people learn through non-formal learning activities, such as workshops and trainings, through the immersive experience of sharing ecovillage life, which adds a unique feature. In recent years, the ESC has become increasingly widespread among ecovillages and permaculture centres across Europe, with many successful projects already realised. There is a great interest among young people in sustainability issues in general and in visiting ecovillages and learning about their sustainable way of life. The ecovillages represented by the partner organisations want to respond to this by offering more opportunities for young people to come and live with them for a period of time as volunteers. The same applies to the different types of sustainability projects. The aim of the project is to increase both the quality and quantity of international youth volunteering activities focused on sustainability and to enable participating youth workers and organisations to carry out high-quality volunteer projects, including the exchange of good practices and peer-to-peer learning.
