Objectives

Based on the survey conducted by the OECD in 2020 on COVID-19 and youth, and being aware that the trajectory of the pandemic varied across different countries, youth organizations expressed their greatest concern about the impact of COVID-19 on mental well-being, disruptions in education and culture, family and friendships, as well as the limitation of individual freedoms of young people. The drastic changes in our routines during the pandemic forced us to alter our social habits and reassess our relationships and our place in the community. During the years when restrictions were still in place, the prolonged lack of face-to-face physical communication made us realize the value of social interactions and group activities. Additionally, the recent Russo-Ukrainian armed conflict is leaving a mark on the youth. In the face of the complex post-COVID-19 scenario that the EU will have to confront in the coming years, along with the aforementioned armed conflict, it is clear that, more than ever, it is crucial to promote actions that contribute to mitigating and repairing the socio-economic effects that both the pandemic and the war have on young people with fewer opportunities. Young people constitute a particularly vulnerable sector that requires special support through actions that enable them to expand their participation in all areas of society and promote their empowerment for the development of initiatives aligned with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Aligned with the LifeComp Framework, the overall objective of the CONNECTEU project represented the initiative of Xano Channel, together with its partner institutions, to promote personal and social development through the acquisition of key competencies, intercultural dialogue, and the exchange of cultural experiences with social impact within youth groups from different rural populations of the Valencian Community, which have limited means of transportation and resources. Furthermore, the project has generated a process of collective intelligence and synergy exchange focused on cultural and social innovation, led by the participating young people themselves, enabling them to adapt to the current changing environment and enhance their inclusion as active citizens in society. They learn about Europe, explore educational and vital opportunities it offers while fostering a sense of belonging to the EU, always from the perspective of environmental sustainability. The specific objectives of the project were: EO1: Support the development of skills and capacities of 25 young people with fewer opportunities and 5 accompanying individuals through 5 mobility experiences of 18 days in different European countries, where the acquisition and practice of the 9 key competencies defined by the LifeComp Framework have been promoted (self-regulation, flexibility, well-being, empathy, communication, collaboration, growth mindset, critical thinking, learning management). EO2: Promote awareness and sensitization about the importance of sustainable development in blue by organizing mobility activities around lakes, rivers, and seas across European geography. EO3: Promote awareness campaigns initiated by the young people themselves, using new technologies to raise awareness about the different educational actions offered by the EU, thus promoting the concept of active European citizenship.
