This project is framed in the reality of the Guadajoz region, an area of the province of Cordoba with high levels of unemployment and a proven trend of population loss, which is aggravated in the groups of young people in training age after secondary school or in search of employment. There is a lack of opportunities perceived by young people, which most of them associate with a deficit of specific social actions for young people and at the same time with the lack of participation of young people due to the weak associative networks. Some local young people feel that, although they find life in their villages attractive, their training or professional development can only take place outside their district, or even their province or region. This is combined with the limitations encountered by those young people who, even if they think this way, have socio-economic and cultural difficulties in leaving their environment to pursue training, whether formally or informally. Even in these circumstances, those who want to stay do not know how to change what they do not like about their environment. All this has the effect of aggravating the problems of depopulation and unemployment in a vicious circle, which is becoming increasingly serious in the region. On the other hand, there is a key age at which young people in the area take these decisions and that is when they turn 18 and have to decide their educational and professional future in most cases. Facilitating the participation of young people of this age in experiences that reinforce their autonomy, their maturity, that expose them to new ideas, could be a revulsive in their way of perceiving and interacting with their reality. The fact that young people can travel, get to know new places, new people and discover other cultures would allow them to become vectors of change and new sources of ideas for the socio-economic and cultural dynamisation of their region. Openness to other perspectives also allows them to see opportunities with a different perspective and opens up a world full of possibilities for young people who have low expectations of their future in their village. From the work with young people with fewer opportunities in the different activities of our association, we have detected that they perceive the European Union as a space from which they receive regional and agricultural aid, subsidies... but they do not identify it with opportunities that they can link with training and personal development experiences. The languages, the lack of economic resources, the environment and the mentality of rural areas... all contribute to the fact that they identify the European Union with other profiles of young people. Thus, the aim of the project would be empowering young people with fewer opportunities who live in the five localities of this rural region through a journey of European initiation to ‘find their way in Europe’ that can start in their region and connect with the European Union at various points in their lives. ‘DiscoverEU Inclusion’ would open the door to a European space without frontiers which, however, for them is full of barriers that they will overcome through their participation, leaving their comfort zone with the specific support that this line of the programme allows.
