Objectives

This project fully responded to the general objective of meeting the needs for exchanges and strengthening the knowledge of managers of small European islands in terms of circular economy and adaptation to climate change, via the specific objectives: -Strengthen the capacities of small islands and less experienced European organizations to work in networks -Strengthen the technical skills of project partners in the aforementioned areas, and sustainable territorial planning. Sharing experiences is essential to strengthen their resilience to climate change. The objective was also to strengthen the capacities to use the SMILO sustainable territorial management tools (territorial diagnosis and strategic plan) and for SMILO to strengthen its technical capacities linked to the subjects of the project and its capacity to lead the islands towards sustainable territorial approaches. -Strengthen European cooperation, through dialogue, the implementation of co-constructed activities, including welcoming a delegation on their own island, and the creation of common results with European partners -Enrich the SMILO catalog of concrete actions dedicated to disseminating good island practices

Background

Small European islands are laboratories for sustainable development and innovative, environmental and technical solutions. They share similar challenges and common solutions to ensure the sustainable management of their environment. However, the isolation, the scarcity of resources, the limited space, in other words the insular character, a priori reduces the range of solutions to preserve them. Thus, the circular economy and solutions against climate change in these territories have become a priority to promote more sustainable development. Preservation and protection of resources, reduction and recovery of waste, development of eco-responsible tourism... Innovative, effective and easily replicable solutions exist locally and deserve to be shared with other European islands and beyond. This is why this project, based on 4 pilot islands and partners similar in terms of the challenges faced, and different in terms of their operating methods, expertise, culture and geography, made it possible to strengthen their skills, to exchange good practices and cooperate at European level to guarantee more sustainable territorial planning.
