The HydroEurope project aimed to transform water engineering in Europe by achieving several key objectives: Innovative educational resources: Development of teaching units focused on flash floods and pollution, adaptable to the master's programs of participating higher education institutions. Problem-based learning: Promotion of a pedagogy centered on real European case studies, encouraging critical thinking and hands-on experience. Engineer skill development: Training engineers in modeling, risk analysis, and sustainable water management. Collaboration and knowledge sharing: Fostering cooperation among higher education institutions, professionals, and other stakeholders to drive educational innovation. Internationalization and digitalization: Creating resources suited for virtual teaching and collaborative online engineering. Sustainability and adoption: Integrating content into master’s programs and making resources widely accessible for broader uptake. Awareness and preparedness: Raising community awareness of water-related risks and enhancing their resilience. HydroEurope aimed to build a skilled and collaborative community for managing water-related risks across Europe.
The HydroEurope project was launched to address a critical gap in the training of hydraulic engineers across Europe. Increasingly severe flash floods and associated water pollution incidents, driven by climate change, call for a new generation of skilled professionals. Existing master's programs, while strong in their respective areas, often lacked a comprehensive, pan-European approach to understanding and managing these complex risks. This project directly responds to the identified need for a more holistic and integrated curriculum that equips future hydraulic engineers with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required to effectively mitigate the risks associated with extreme hydrological events. It aims to foster greater regional resilience and promote the adoption of sustainable water management practices across diverse European landscapes.
