Objectives

Re.A.L.I.se is the third workshop implemented by the association The Northern Lights in Saint-Nizier-Le-Bouchoux in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. As previous trainings, Re.A.L.I.se was designed in line with the report of the emergency to adapt our current lifestyles to resilient ones. Indeed, this training was designed in line with the 2022 IPCC (intergovernmental panel on climate change) report warning the world is set to reach the 1.5ºC level within the next two decades and said that only the most drastic cuts in carbon emissions from now would help prevent an environmental disaster. Thus, what we wanted to achieve by implementing this project was to find local and resilient issues to climate change that could be applied to European level. This included : Energy sufficiency by looking forward to technology solutions on sustainable criterias. And also by empowering people, mainly those living in abandoned rural areas, by providing them know-hows and knowledge to be able to take their energy needs into their own hands, while creating solutions for their context, in a collaborative design approach. Moreover, as its two previous successful workshops (Perm’être & A.CLIMA.té), Re.A.L.I.se aimed to find local sustainable solutions for climate adaptation that could be disseminated at local, national and European level. Indeed, as Re.A.L.I.se focused on energy sufficiency, one of its main objectives was to provide to participants keys to create their own machines and tools for effective collaboration and abundance. Thus, in this mindset, we continued to collaborate hand-in-hand with our 6 partner organisations (Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Malta), in order to enlarge and consolidate the European network. Also, this project was designed in a 13-days training aiming to gather 34 youth workers from 7 different European countries in order to provide them knowledge and know-how on energy sufficiency they could disseminate in their country in their projects with young people and as a ripple effect to their peers. Last but not least, each participant is a multiplier potential of the learning outcomes’ dissemination. One of the other aspects of this training was to participate in a more inclusive and solidary society, that’s why it was asked to each partner organisations to send at least one person facing fewer opportunities. Indeed, we welcomed 11 participants facing obstacles, mainly economical. To sum up, we aimed to gather youth workers from different European countries in order to : -Federate and reinforce the European network; -Find local solutions against global warming that could be disseminated to European level -Assess the mobility of youth workers around Europe; -Provide them a high quality informal training to help them to enter in the labour market and decrease the unemployment rate; -Assess their language skills; -Participate to the creation of a more inclusive and solidary Europe; -Revitalise abandoned rural areas. To achieve all those aims, participants worked on three main elements implementing the acquired knowledge of the theoretical sessions and reach the following objectives : 1- Basic knowledge of electricity was given for future use and during the seminar we implemented a solar panel. 2-A micro-methanisation system for producing energy out of decomposition was the second element that we built and which served the community kitchen and other public activities. 3-A Jan Pan System, a water heating system where heating comes from decomposed material. Heated water was used for various purposes (showers, cleaning, etc.). The main facilitator, Jean Phillipe Valla is an engineer and now a farmer, his goal was to show that it was possible nowadays with a small budget to live far from the grid, energy wise, production wise, transport wise etc. His contribution in the project was focused on how to make our own tools and methanisation system for several tasks in the farmland life. Alexandros Filippidis is an engineer, bringing a solid background on renewable energy on both technical and policy level. He is founder of Aftonia-Abundance NGO, Coordinator of Precious Plastic Greece and co-founder of Sustainable Energy Youth Network, and Prosol Energies. His workshop was focused on his knowledge over energy cooperative systems and solar energy practices. And, Hervé Michniewics is professional in blacksmithing and metalwork. He has vast experience in working with metal for many companies for more than 30 years. In this project, he contributed with his knowledge and experience on how to create a project from A to Z. As an overall approach, Re.A.L.I.Se addressed more in-depth questions of providing key elements for climate adaptation in terms of energy and making tools but also to initiate participants to concrete methods and tools for implementing social building principles and participatory design within organisations and communities they were members.
