Objectives

Through Model European Union Strasbourg 2022, we wanted to introduce the concept of decision-making in the European Union to young people in France and beyond. With the rise of Euroscepticism in many Member States, we felt that it is important for young people to have a chance at role-playing and be in the very shoes of politicians, decision-makers and key stakeholders to better understand the need for pluralism for a healthy and functioning democracy. Through our project, participants and the team itself had a chance to realise that decisions made are not easy but all the more, it is important to find common grounds, compromise and negotiate considering the well-being and interests of not just one interested party but more towards the common good at the local, national and European level. This was achieved through the various roles that participants undertook as part of simulating the Ordinary Legislative Procedure of the European Union. A key objective of the project therefore was engaging and empowering conscious citizens who are better learned about decision-making in the EU. Another objective of the project was to bring young people together from various communities and cultures to promote intercultural understanding, foster social cohesion, and create a more inclusive and cohesive society. Interacting with individuals from diverse communities enhances intercultural communication skills. Young people learn to navigate cultural differences, develop effective communication strategies, and appreciate the importance of cultural sensitivity. These skills are crucial in today's globalized world and contribute to better intercultural relations which is what we wanted to achieve as well through MEU Strasbourg 2022.
