Objectives

Before the Covid-19 crise, 20% of France's 2.7 million students were living below the poverty line (according to a report by the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs), and the situation has exploded in recent months. 79% of respondents used food aid for the first time during the last academic year, and 50% of students felt they hadn't had enough to eat repeatedly since the beginning of the academic year (according to CO'P1 in La rentrée d'après). In practical terms, it has been difficult for many of these young people to meet basic needs. For example, paying housing charges (50%) or having a healthy and balanced diet (52%). However, at the same time, students are expressing a growing desire to move towards healthy, local, sustainable and, if possible, organic food. The results of the National Student Consultation (2020), carried out by RESES on a sample of 50,000 students in 2020, confirmed students' desire to move towards a more responsible diet (94% of students). However; students encounter obstacles on the way to a more sustainable diet: the first being the price of products for 70% of students. To respond to the growing precariousness of students, their need to move towards sustainable food, and the increasingly low participation of young people in the public debate, RESES wishes to organize a Student Convention on Sustainable Food on the principle of the Citizen's Convention on Climate Change, who took place in France in 2020. The Student Convention on Sustainable Food (CEAD) consists of training 40 students, recruited according to criteria that allow for the representativeness of the student population, on the major issues of sustainable food, food and agricultural systems and the functioning of European institutions. The project is divided into several phases and events, which will aim to promote dialogue between students and experts and decision-makers, raise awareness, train and develop the skills of CEAD members in order to formulate concrete policy proposals on sustainable food for European decision-makers in the context of the 2024 European elections campaign. The project has the following objectives : - To create an active and lively community in the student world around the project and the themes of sustainable food - To experiment with other forms of civic and citizen participation in order to create dynamics, other forms of democracy and careers - To raise students' awareness on ecology, the major issues of sustainable food, food and agricultural systems and political decision-making processes - To raise students' awareness of the institutions of the European Union and of European citizenship - To train students in the methods of popular education that promote collaborative work and collective intelligence - To develop concrete, well-founded, argued, realistic and reusable political proposals in order to build a relevant advocacy that ensures a political and media support of the CEAD. - To bring the voice of young people into the public debate and the media in order to become aware of the legitimacy of their expression, the validity of what they say and their commitment at their level. - To develop sustainable democratic tools and a model of participation that can be replicated and disseminated to other issues The project will run for 20 months and will take the form of several events bringing together all CEAD members, thematic webinars throughout the process, a 5-day summer camp to build and formulate proposals, field trips to meet local actors and European political decision-makers, and finally, a restitution of the CEAD's work in April 2024 during a large press conference attended by a hundred young people, associations and decision-makers.
