Objectives

The goals of the projects are in accordance with the goals of the accreditation. Through these projects we have: 1. Improved understanding of liberal democracy and threats to it from populism The participants learned about the basic principles of liberal democracies – free and fair elections, rule of law and peaceful transition of power and how populism is different from it and a threat to it. Populism divides people into “us” (the people) vs “them” (elites). It argues that society is run by the elites and we need the great leader as a representative of the people to fight the elites. Populism vilifies people who are different from you and in this way prevents compromise and consensus-building which are the key to successful democracies. 2. Improved understanding of European history and culture The participants learned about unique aspects of European history and culture and how this has helped Europe and the West become the dominant power in the world for the past few hundred years, including Western Christian Family, improved position of women and other marginalised groups, the importance of free speech. Through this they have developed pride in the accomplishments of European civilisation. However, they also learned about the many mistakes Europeans have made, above all the horrors of Transatlantic slave trade. They learned that people can make mistakes but it is important to learn from them and correct them and the slavery was an excellent example for this. The horrors of European Transatlantic slave trade created a European and North American movement to ban slavery all over the world, a movement which was largely successful.
