This project was our answer to the situation that happen in summer 2021 during another youth exchange hosted by Impress when we identified the ned for this project. Back then, one of the participants with diabetes faced a situation of a low sugar level while other, willing to help, asked is he needs insulin which is very dangerous situation and can have fatal consequences. In that moment we knew we want to have this project and one year later, we did it – we managed to bring together young people with and without diabetes from 5 countries to learn and share experience about living with diabetes, about food, physical activity and all the other important aspects which need to be considered while living with diabetes but also have it in mind if we want to prevent diabetes of happening. By having this project, we also wanted to address other issues we identified at the beginning when project was developed, such as more and more people being diagnosed with diabetes. Many of those people are young people (diabetes that happens at young age, usually until age of 20 is type 1 diabetes and it is totally dependant on insulin). Stress and unhealthy life styles, next to genetic predisposition can make anyone face this challenging diagnosis at any moment. Also, what we realised during the project, each of us knows at least one person living with diabetes. The main focus of the project was on its participants but we also wanted to use this project to raise the awareness of other people as well. For that we used our creativity and on the last day we were producing project outputs in form of posters, memes and other simple products that can be easily shared online and send a message we want to send. This was done on the last day so participants can use all the knowledge they gained to created quality outputs. Most importantly, by having people with diabetes in the project and with them sharing their stories and experiences of living with diabetes 24/7, we wanted to emphasise that living with diabetes is not a “dead sentence” as some people might think, especially today when high technologies and high-quality medicine are enabling life which is equal to those who do not have diabetes. Of course, everyone needs to be aware that living with diabetes is challenging, but with good management and self-awareness life can be nice and positive and without any problems. By implementing this project, we all wanted to learn about each other’s culture, language and way of living in their countries emphasise the importance of diversity but also all the issues around accepting and living diversity that exist in our communities and society in general. Objectives of the project were: O1: to learn about diabetes together and to understand it better (what is diabetes, what types exist, what is causing it and what are consequences, its specific language etc.) O2: to provide space to discuss about diabetes openly: views, experiences, feelings, uncertainties etc. O3: to break the taboo of living with chronical health condition such as diabetes and to learn how to react positively in certain situations (eg. when a person is taking insulin or checking sugar level in public) O3: to emphasise enormous relevance of living balanced life in preventing (or handling) diabetes: eating healthy and balanced, sleeping enough, doing sports, avoiding stress etc. O4: to unlock creative potential of participants which will serve the aim of raising the awareness about diabetes of online community
