Objectives

By implementing this project, we wanted to modernize the teaching process of maritime law at maritime colleges and raise the professional competences of teachers who teach maritime law and related subjects. A modern teaching process primarily involves digital teaching materials, easily accessible to everyone. Students of maritime colleges should be distinguished from students of law colleges and teaching materials should be designed primarily to cover the entire content, and also to be easy to adopt for all those who do not have a sufficient level of previous legal education. All of the above has been achieved by this project. On the other hand, since maritime is an extremely dynamic branch of the economy, which is continuously experiencing changes in the form of technical progress and more modern regulations regulating maritime activities, the professional knowledge of teachers needs to be continuously upgraded, especially in areas that have undergone significant changes in recent years (safety, security, labor relations of seafarers, port law, etc.). Only a teacher who monitors the development of the profession can adequately prepare a future seafarer for contemporary trends in the maritime industry.

Background

Years of experience in teaching maritime law in the process of educating seafarers and discussions with teachers who teach the same subject at other higher maritime educational institutions, led to identifying key problems in this project: - the lack of adequate teaching literature that fully covers all the required content in accordance with IMO Model Course 7.01; - the inconsistency of the content and methods of teaching in the maritime law subject as prescribed by IMO Model Course 7.01. The key results of this project address both of the above issues, not only at the partner institutions but also at other higher maritime educational institutions that educate seafarers. The teaching materials are now available in digital form, via the project website, and are designed in such a way that they do not represent an obstacle with regard to the country or place of teaching. The guidelines for developing the curriculum of the maritime law subject contains a detailed maritime law syllabus aligned with the STCW Convention, while considering all the particularities of national law. Constructive alignment of all learning outcomes has been carried out, both at the level of individual thematic units and at the level of the subject entirely.
