After our participation in the International Youth Exchange project 'Digital Literacy', hosted by our Romanian partner, we realised that our youth group is interested to get involved and with our support to organise youth-led projects. Consequently, we met with the young people to brainstorm together regarding the current issues that concern our society and can be addressed through an international youth project. After careful consideration on the many issues we came across, we commonly decided that we want to work on the issue of the refugee crisis, which remains controversial in Europe, let alone in Hungary, where we have witnessed the non-welcoming approach of the locals towards the refugees. Our group, after taking under consideration the intercultural approach of the activity and the different aspects of the issue in question, realised the value of implementing the activity in Greece, a country which is dealing with the refugee crisis in Europe for almost 10 years, in accordance with statistics from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (https://data2.unhcr.org/en/situations/mediterranean/location/5179). Considering that millions of people have reached Greece seeking protection, Greece’s neighbouring countries have closed their borders and a series of EU member states have not been willing to accept asylum seekers, a humanitarian crisis has been taking place in the country, through which a number of populist and radical right organisations appeared around Europe (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36130006). Our youth group created this project as a way to share their understanding about the refugee crisis with fellow young European individuals but also members of their local community, who weren’t well informed regarding the issue and the current status of the refugees that are in Europe. In this context, we understood the importance of the refugee crisis phenomenon on an international level and our responsibility to act as individuals of our society and through our respective NGOs to confront this problem more methodically. The project’s objectives were the following: -Raise youngsters’ empathy and understanding in regard with the difficulties that refugees are experiencing -Support youngsters’ on suggesting measures to support the integration of young refugees -Raise youngsters’ awareness regarding the value of European solidarity -Foster a network of young people, willing to work further for the integration of young refugees in their local realities.
