Objectives

The main aim of the project, called Friends of future in the present, was to familiarise local youth in Óbuda with participation and active citizenship and to bring their ideas to the attention of local decision-makers. We wanted to build closer links with professionals in the district and with all those who are committed to youth work. We wanted to reach out to schools in the district to give local young people a greater reach. Our main aim was to reach out to the young people in the district who are at risk of falling out of school and to provide them with a safe leisure activity that could have a preventive effect on their lives in the long term. The Friends of Future Association runs a community space in Kaszásdűlő called KRÉM, which is mostly attended by young people with some kind of social disadvantage. Our primary aim was to open up to the existing base of young people, so that they could get to know Budapest outside the district, and also to recruit new active members. In addition to meeting the basic needs of young people, we also wanted to provide them with information about other opportunities, both in terms of further education and other participation programmes. We often feel that there is a lack of information flow on issues affecting young people and unfortunately, if the family is not proactive and does not hold the young person firmly or the young person does not have their own needs and desires for their future, they can be very lost. We wanted to fill these gaps and mitigate them by expanding our network of relationships, thus relieving overburdened educational institutions, and connecting with youth who do not feel successful in school in new, more inclusive, experiential ways. Our core values are in line with those of the European Union, which is particularly important for youth from often marginalised backgrounds, who have the same aspirations and ambitions as their counterparts from healthier backgrounds, but face far greater challenges and disadvantages in their daily lives. For them, it is even more important to be able to spend their free time in an accepting, safe and supportive environment, experiencing the benefits of being part of a community. In the same way, we are constantly striving to ensure that during the project, we have also made sure that the programmes for them are based on their ideas and needs during implementation. This attitude is not commonplace for them, and often they have little say in their otherwise rather stressful living conditions. Our aim is to get young people more actively involved in the issues that directly affect them, which requires a great deal of resources, as these young people often live their daily lives in a very repressed way. Therefore, when designing the project, we have tried not to be over-ambitious about what participation and active citizenship can mean for the young people who come to us. The project was also based on the fact that decades of experience of the Friends of Future Association have shown that a lack of purpose, a certain lack of demandingness and critical thinking is quite significant in the lives of young people. It is therefore very common for them to carry on the often harmful family patterns they have adopted into their own lives, their quality of life remaining at the same level, and this is how it is produced from generation to generation. We wanted to change this process to some extent during the project (and also during our general operations), or at least to start the process of enabling the young people who come to us to express their own opinions and their own way of life more clearly and honestly.
