Objectives

Muintir-Bystander Training aimed to equip youth workers, youth theatre leaders and artists who are involved in their local communities with a skill set for expressing, communicating and guiding young people around the issues raised by violence against women. We were interested particularly in focusing on solidarity and building the knowledge needed to respond to current issues on the matter and to developing tools to become Active Bystanders in incidents of violence or harassment. he learning was about how we can use drama and film as tools for raising awareness about the things a bystander can do to safely help when they witness discrimination and for increasing knowledge about what constitutes 'violence' - understanding that it need not always be physical. Through drama, participants were introduced to relevant characters and situations and explored the types of active by-standers and allies who make a difference. The training course aimed to provide young leaders with this space of exploring, practicing and sharing their experience. Participants learned some new tools to challenge discrimination, to gain compassion, empathy and understanding, and to produce response systems with confidence. The project supported them and encouraged them to pursue the changes they want to see in their communities across Europe and beyond. The participants worked in groups of mixed nationalities where they had the opportunity to share their concerns and experiences and develop a set of skills that would be beneficial towards creating a dynamic community that would be based on solidarity, engagement, creativity and empowerment. They were able to connect with young leaders from around Europe and beyond and through this shared experience, navigate themselves and the young people in their communities and spaces through being active young women and men, citizens of the world. OBJECTIVES The programme brought together young leaders to share experiences and methods of dealing with this type of social issue through their youth work. Participants were aged 21 with no upper limit, they were competent facilitators and already youth leaders . We were able to mix different cultures and nationalities so that each had a broader understanding on how violence against women has developed. The participants learned new facilitation techniques practiced in the other’s country and have since gone on to sharing this learning with their own groups in their home countries by developing their own short workshops addressed to young teens and also adults. Additionally, as a result of the training ,participants created short films in groups, during the activity week, which they brought back to their local communities as well and shared them in order to initiate a discussion or to show examples of the types of activities that can be done in the community.
