Objectives

The primary aim of the Intercambio+ VET project was to facilitate more effective integration between language learning, vocational education and training (VET), and the world of work. The core objectives included: (1) Addressing gaps between language learning, VET, and the workplace by developing and piloting innovative, vocationally specific language learning materials and teaching methods tailored to key economic sectors. (2) Adapting language learning and VET to better meet employer skills needs. This was achieved through the integration of language learning with work experience and vocational training, ensuring that learners acquired both language proficiency and practical vocational skills aligned with industry demands. (3) Supporting language schools and teaching professionals by providing resources and training to help educators adopt vocationally based language learning, making it accessible to a broader range of learners from diverse social, economic, and educational backgrounds.

Background

The Intercambio+ VET project was an opportunity to address the intersection between language learning and VET in an innovative way. We recognised the increasing demand for sector-specific language skills within the European labour market, including from the experience of existing activities of the organisations within the partnership working within VET. The opportunity to contribute to educational innovation was also an exciting prospect for the partnership, particularly in the development of new pedagogical approaches such as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), thereby integrating language learning seamlessly with work experience and VET provision and enhancing the employability and workforce readiness of VET learners by addressing both linguistic and technical skills simultaneously. Additionally, the project's focus on inclusion and diversity aligned closely with activities already being pursued by the organisations within the partnership. By developing scalable, cost-effective solutions for sector-specific language learning, the project aimed to make these training opportunities more accessible to learners from diverse backgrounds, particularly those facing economic, social or educational disadvantages.
