Objectives

The ACORN project was conceived as a landmark initiative aligned with the goals of the European Year of Youth 2022, aiming to empower rural youth and create a sustainable framework for their involvement in rural development. The project set out to achieve the following objectives: Develop a New Suite of Resources for Youth-Inclusive Rural Development: Create transferable mechanisms, such as the Young Rural Developers Toolkit and the Guidebook for Rural Youth Assemblies, to inspire and empower rural youth to become active participants in shaping their communities. Engage, Empower, and Inspire Rural Youth: Equip young people in rural areas to act as active citizens, co-creators, and implementors of rural development initiatives, ensuring their voices are heard in decision-making processes. Create Lasting Change Across Four European Regions: Implement a youth-oriented rural development programme in Roscommon (Ireland), Idrija (Slovenia), Castile and León (Spain), and Malta, addressing region-specific challenges and promoting community resilience Reinforce Links Between Policy, Research, and Practice: Connect policymakers, practitioners, and rural youth to turn policy into practice, ensuring alignment with EU +national strategies

Background

The ACORN project was initiated to address the pressing challenges faced by rural youth and their communities across Europe. These challenges included barriers to active participation in rural development, a lack of inclusive decision-making mechanisms, and insufficient opportunities for youth empowerment and leadership. The project sought to provide innovative solutions to these issues by fostering youth-led rural development initiatives. Needs Addressed by ACORN Youth Disengagement from Rural Development: Many young people in rural areas felt excluded from decision-making processes, resulting in limited participation in shaping their communities. This lack of engagement was compounded by socio-economic challenges such as youth unemployment and limited access to education and training. Rural areas were experiencing declining populations as young people migrated to urban centres for better opportunities. There was a noticeable gap in tools and resources tailored to empower youth to become active citizens and leaders in rural settings. Existing programmes often failed to address the specific needs of rural youth, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds, including NEETs Need for Cross-Sector Collaboration
