This project began after IT Carlow had merged with (1 May 2022) Waterford IT to become South East Technological University (SETU). Many changes were implemented during this year, including the introduction of semesterisation to SETU Carlow, which meant the restructuring of programmes and modules. This would lead to more opportunities for many future students to undertake Erasmus+ mobilities in semester two of their third year as many programmes introduced 30 ECT work placement for this time. SETU Carlow’s participation in Erasmus+ allows for the development and empowerment of students and enhances their ability to participate actively in society, in line with the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty to "encourage the participation of young people in democratic life in Europe". Students who complete an Erasmus+ mobility experience return more culturally aware, able to find solutions in difficult or challenging contexts and with the ability to plan and carry out learning independently. Students now enter a more global, internationally orientated workplace. Participation in Erasmus+ has increased student employability. Through facilitating the mobility of staff to teach and train in other Higher Educational Institutes (HEIs), Erasmus+ creates stronger and more open networks for future collaboration between partners and also the workplace. Staff report greater skillsets acquired through the sharing of knowledge and practices.
