Objectives

The IUA considers a learner-centred approach and culturally responsive teaching methods to be the key to creating a multicultural learning community that is based on equality and inclusion. One way is to implement this is to offer opportunities for our staff and students to travel and participate in a dialogue with institutions, organizations and people abroad. As the second project IUA receives funding for in Sierra Leone, this time around we focused on widening the net of collaboration in Freetown further and to build on the developments thus far in previous collaboration with Aurora Foundation for a greater impact. Sierra Leone, boasts a rich craft making tradition including woodcarving, textiles, basket weaving, and pottery, tailoring and fashion design are also thriving. However most designers are self-made and uneducated. Therefore we considered it a great opportunity to be able to connect with Limkokwing University that has a campus in Freetown. We were interested in seeing their pedagogical strategies and follow their teachers and students during our visit to get an understanding on their impact on the design society in Sierra Leone.
