The University of Iceland is a public research university with internationalisation embedded across its institutional strategy. One of the pillars of the Strategy is “Open and International,” and the ICM project has been an essential mechanism for advancing this pillar. It has enabled staff and students to collaborate, study, and train with partners in regions that would otherwise be considered remote or challenging. This has broadened the University’s international network, supported joint projects, and contributed directly to research collaborations. The aim of the ICM project at the UI is to provide staff with opportunities to collaborate with partners in countries with which the University has close ties. In doing so, staff can implement internationalisation strategies in practical terms — by building connections, sharing expertise, and supporting mobility. The UI’s strategy sets ambitious goals for strengthening teaching, research, and engagement in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with the purpose of contributing both to Icelandic society and to the global community. The ICM project supports these aims by fostering international partnerships that are meaningful, sustainable, and mutually beneficial
