The OPEN4U project aimed to equip SMEs and VET institutions with the tools and knowledge necessary to integrate open innovation practices effectively. Our objectives were: 1. Increase awareness and understanding of open innovation among SMEs, particularly senior employees and R&D staff, enabling them to adopt external collaboration strategies. 2. Enhance the capacity of VET institutions to provide training on innovation-driven work environments, ensuring that learners and junior employees develop essential skills. 3. Develop and deliver digital tools, including an interactive open innovation catalogue and training materials tailored to SMEs and VET learners, fostering engagement and accessibility. 4. Promote cross-sector collaboration, strengthening cooperation between educational institutions, businesses, and innovation facilitators. 5. Ensure sustainability and long-term impact by providing practical, scalable, and transferable resources that can be used beyond the project’s duration. Through these objectives, OPEN4U successfully bridged the gap between traditional and open innovation models, fostering a culture of collaboration, adaptability, and digital readiness.
The OPEN4U project was designed to address the increasing need for open innovation practices in SMEs and vocational education and training (VET). In an era of rapid digital transformation, many SMEs struggle to integrate external expertise, innovative methodologies, and digital tools into their operations. Similarly, VET institutions face challenges in preparing learners for innovation-driven work environments. Through desk research and partner consultations, we identified key gaps: 1. Limited awareness among SMEs regarding the benefits of open innovation. 2. Lack of structured guidance for senior employees and R&D staff to implement innovation strategies. 3. Need for digital learning tools to train junior employees and graduates in open innovation. By leveraging the expertise of innovation facilitators and makers within our consortium, OPEN4U has successfully introduced interactive digital tools, training materials, and strategic recommendations, ensuring SMEs and VET institutions can adapt, collaborate, and innovate effectively.
