Objectives

As the primary objective, we aim to plan a training for health professionals focused on endometriosis in adolescents, described as similar to a "Mona Lisa smile with a mysterious innocence”. This training could help clinicians to identify adolescents at risk of endometriosis, in order to refer them to a specialty center for further evaluation and diagnosis. Considering the peculiar aspect of endometriosis in adolescence, which makes the diagnosis challenging, we chose to include European partners experienced in endometriosis diagnosis and management in order to create a standardized and shared approach which can be reproducible across Europe. Our specific objectives are: - to improve health professionals knowledge of the disease, supporting them with extensive and constantly updated didactical material - to provide them with an easily available tool to improve competences and a score to identify patients at risk

Background

An accurate international literature revision highlighted a lack of scientific knowledge of endometriosis diagnosis and management strategies in adolescents among doctors, the absence of international teaching and learning programs focusing on this specific topic, no shared standard of care as well as the need for adequate training. The gap in medical education calls for innovative educational and digital tools for clinicians to increase the standard of care on an international level. We aim to implement new tools for health professionals (including general practitioners, gynecologists and residents in obstetrics and gynecology) focused on diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis in adolescents. This training is needed to help clinicians to identify adolescents at risk of endometriosis, in order to refer them to a specialty center for further evaluation and diagnosis. Considering the peculiar aspect of endometriosis in adolescence, which makes the diagnosis challenging even for gynecologist who know how to diagnose and treat the disease in adult women.
