Objectives

The objectives we set ourselves with the LEARN project were, specifically: - Increase in staff skills and competences; - Acquisition of up-to-date teaching methodologies and evaluation processes in the non-formal and informal education sector intended for adults, immigrants and detainees. Our mobility project aimed, on the one hand, to create a professional heritage and good practices to be reapplied, in order to make our school system “proficient” in the scholastic integration of foreign students, intercultural education and adult lifelong learning process. On the other hand, with a targeted visit to the CEPA in Villardeveyo, specifically dealing with education in prison, we sought to reformulate the procedure for effective assessment practices validating the skills of prisoners, whose actual abilities are always difficult to recognize.

Background

The CPIA of Syracuse is structured in territorial service networks with a central administrative headquarters, located in Syracuse, and numerous delivery points, including prison locations, scattered throughout the Syracuse area. The CPIA offers a wide range of training: - Italian language literacy courses for foreigners (A1/A2) with certification; - Level I courses for the achievement of the final qualification of the 1st cycle of education (former middle school diploma); - Level II courses for the certification of basic compulsory education skills; - European projects carried out with FAMI and ESF funds. The students are varied: adults, including foreigners, who have not completed their compulsory education; foreign adults, who intend to enroll in literacy and Italian language learning courses; young people who have reached the age of 16, in possession of the final qualification of the first cycle of education, demonstrating that they cannot attend day courses. The CPIA also operates within prisons offering the same training offer.
