Objectives

A significant portion of our students come from a socio-cultural disadvantaged background, which means they may find it challenging to easily break free from the isolationism of our region and engage with a different reality. The participation of these students in mobility programs is crucial because it could offer them the opportunity to broaden their cultural horizons, awaken their curiosity, make them aware of their limitations and strengths. Participation in collaborative and exchange projects could help them improve and deepen their practical skills, such as language proficiency or IT skills, but most importantly, it would have a positive impact on their personal growth. The project aims to give students a greater awareness regarding the fragility of the environment in general and our territory in particular. Our city is located near a petrochemical hub that over the years has caused serious environmental damage. Therefore, we aim to make students reflect on the conditions of our territory. But reflection must be followed by action; students must become advocates for a sustainable way of life and serve as spokespeople within the community. Change is still possible; our city can move towards sustainable development.

Background

Our city has a strong industrial significance thanks to the petrochemical hub, which in the past has contributed to creating a certain level of prosperity but has unfortunately caused serious environmental damage over the years. Recently, also due to the generalized crisis in the sector, there has been a significant contraction in employment, resulting in unemployment rates well above the national average. The lack of a dynamic economic-production fabric has exacerbated the phenomenon of school dropout and a lack of motivation to study. Therefore, schools need engaging activities that make students active participants in their educational journey. The new industrial policies aimed at greater environmental sustainability and the presence of the new port/marina area require the development of new professional skills and competencies, such as: language skills, IT skills, relational abilities, and team-building skills. Alongside these competencies, it's essential for schools to work towards helping our students understand that environmental sustainability and the protection of the territory are essential priorities for a comprehensive education in active citizenship.
