The Institute's primary challenge is certainly linked to the territory. It would be necessary to guarantee all segments of the population both a basic level of literacy and numeracy skills and access to quality education, also due to the presence of qualified teachers thanks to their training. Despite the constant activity of teachers in this sense, the problem of dropout and educational poverty remains rooted in the neighborhood and concerns all the school's stakeholders. The primary intent of this training process was to learn about the impact that other European schools have on these "sensitive peripheries" and to benefit from them in the short, medium and long term.
The “Via Maffi” Comprehensive Institute is made up of three complexes located in the suburban Primavalle district and four hospital sections in the city of Rome. The reality of the neighborhood is mixed, with medium-low economic power, a strong presence of non-EU citizens, including second generation ones, and a level of compulsory schooling. The pupils we work with are aged between 11 and 14. The territory under the Institute's competence, although not included in the list of areas defined as at risk, can certainly be classified among the so-called "sensitive suburbs": the composition of the school population requires additional and specialized figures in some areas, such as cultural mediation . In fact, the Institute participates in various projects for the strengthening of inclusion actions for foreigners and Roma, Sinti and Caminanti pupils in the area as well as for the professional training of pupils at socio-economic risk. In addition to this, actions related to anti-dispersion have become fundamental, in order to lower the school dropout rate.
