Objectives

The implementation of the Erasmus project has been integrated into the University of Udine’s Strategic Plan 2023-2025, which aims, among other objectives to integrate research and teaching into an international dimension. This objective seeks to increase the international visibility of the University of Udine, attract new financial resources, and prepare students for the challenges of a globalized society and the labor market, including opportunities beyond national borders. The concrete actions taken by the University of Udine to achieve this goal include promoting the university’s academic offerings, particularly to partner countries, and increasing the mobility of teaching and administrative staff to develop an international partnership policy. This has enabled the university to foster the promotion of its academic offerings in neighboring regions of Eastern Europe (e.g., Romania, Bulgaria, etc.) and to support staff mobility also to other European countries that are particularly attractive for student mobility, both inbound and outbound (e.g., Germany, Austria, France, and Spain). This mobility is not only aimed at creating or consolidating international teaching and research relationships but also at acquiring administrative and project-related skills, as well as best practices to be introduced in the University. Staff mobility has also been co-financed by the University in cases where the Erasmus grant was insufficient to cover all expenses. In this context, the Erasmus project has given further impetus to the University’s policy: on one hand, through Erasmus without Papers, it has been a driving force in the revision of bilateral agreements; on the other, it has allowed the University of Udine to become known in new contexts and has encouraged the development of a more attractive academic offering for incoming students, thanks to the creation of numerous modules in English or entire study programs taught in English. In line with the strategic planning of the University of Udine, the Erasmus project has also contributed to consolidating the objective of supporting international didactics through new forms of student mobility: internships, theses, intensive programs, curricular study trips, double degree programs. The University, in fact, has made it a priority to remove structural and administrative barriers to both physical and virtual student mobility, with the goal of increasing such mobility by at least 20%. In this sense, in recent years, procedures and support mechanisms for mobility have been developed, made possible also through Erasmus+. Specifically, the digitalization of procedures for the full and automatic recognition of study periods abroad and the credits earned has been completed, and the University is ready to implement the Erasmus Student Card. At the same time, the academic offering for outgoing mobility students has been optimized, strengthened, and expanded thanks to new forms of outgoing and in-house exchange provided by the Erasmus Blended Intensive Programmes. In this sense, the University also aims to further encourage and support departmental initiatives in other forms of international cooperation and mobility, such as virtual mobility in between BIPs or short-term mobility, in collaboration with local organizations and institutions, and by fostering interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary initiatives aimed at acquiring soft skills.
