Objectives

The main goal of this project is to design and deliver a complete train-the-trainer course for simulation in healthcare. Our course is high-quality, future-proof and freely available. High Quality: the course has been prepared by experts in the field of simulation and furthermore the materials prepared underwent a rigorous review and revision process. The first round took place once the first draft of the materials had been prepared, when they were reviewed by a panel of external experts and then revised by us according to their feedback. A second round took place after the delivery of the courses: feedback from both the trainees and the trainers involved in each of the pilot courses has been collected and used to revise and improve once more the course, to finally obtain the final version. Future Proof: the course describes both the techniques and the technologies involved in simulation. While the focus is on the current state of the art, we also discuss the use of the most modern approaches, involving the use of mixed-reality (MR) technologies that will surely become part of the tools used in simulation. Freely Available: all the materials produced will be freely available online to anyone online on the project website.

Background

We are a team of people who strongly believe in simulation as an effective way to train and retrain healthcare professionals and we work for a wide adoption of this technique. Implementing simulation in healthcare training however requires resources, both in monetary terms and in terms of human resources. Training an educator who can use simulation as a teaching technique (also known as facilitator) requires a team of experts, will and time. Although it is not up to us to provide the latter ones, we thought that we could provide the former, by designing a train-the-trainer course putting together some of the best experts in the field. Train the trainer courses for medical simulation can vary in quality, length, availability and cost. By creating an international team, we designed a course that can set an European wide standard of knowledge in this field. With this project we address the need to provide a high-quality, future-proof, freely available course that can be used Europe wide (and farther) by simulation centers, universities, higher education institutions, hospital and medical centers and other stakeholders to train the faculty that will enable them to implement simulation in their healthcare education.
