Regarding the aims, objectives and methods foreseen in the gymnasium strategic plan (years 202-2024) and having analyzed the teachers’ needs to develop STEAM competencies, we have chosen the improvement of teachers’ STEAM competencies as the aim with the view to stimulate STEAM subject learning among students. Teachers of sciences, nature studies, social subjects, foreign languages and art participated in the project. In the course of the project the following methods were applied: Teachers’ English language skills and competencies were improved. General English Courses in Malta were attended to implement this aim. Teachers’ STEAM competencies were developed in order to organize and carry out various scientific research activities and experiments in the lessons of different subjects. These methods will make STEAM subject learning more popular among students. For the implementation of this aim teachers participated in STEAM courses in Turkey and Greece.
Panevezio 5-oji gimnazija is a budgetary non-profit children teaching educational institution of Panevezys city municipality that provides basic (IInd stage) and secondary education. The main areas of activities are formal and non-formal education. Schoolchildren are 14-19 years of age. The number of students is 662 and the saff number is 58. For the implementation of the gymnasium strategic plan (years 2020-2024) various means for teaching and learning of STEAM subjects are foreseen to stimulate students’ creativity and to improve teachers’ STEAM competencies. Before the beginning of the project we were aware of the STEAM methods that are applied at educational institutions in Lithuania. We practised activities at Panevezys regional STEAM center and noticed that the teachers’ team lacks practical skills on how to apply STEAM methods in the lessons. We suggested searching for information on the internet on how STEAM methods are applied in practice by experienced and competent teachers, but we faced the problem that our teachers’ English language knowledge is not sufficient enough to understand teaching material properly.
