COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the obesity and activity levels of the youth, as evidenced by various studies. One recent study conducted in Italy focused on lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 lockdown among 41 children and adolescents with obesity (Pietrobelli A, Pecoraro L, Ferruzzi A, et al., 2020). Similar situations were observed in other European countries and our partner countries. The research findings revealed a decrease in sports activities, an increase in sleep duration, and a significant rise in screen time among young individuals. Furthermore, research conducted by the Lithuanian Sports University's researchers indicated that physical activity levels among Lithuanian youth have been declining over the past two decades, particularly in terms of endurance indicators that reflect cardiovascular capacity. These findings raise concerns about a potential future increase in the number of individuals with cardiovascular diseases, which currently have the highest mortality rates, as well as the escalating economic burden on the state due to treatment costs. There is no denying that the health issues arising from the global rise in physical inactivity and obesity among children and adolescents, where 23.6% of children in Lithuania are classified as overweight or obese, present a significant public health challenge in the 21st century (Report of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania, 2021). As a youth group from the Sport Center of Sirvintos, we noticed that many young individuals among us were opting for more sedentary activities and consuming fast food or snacks due to the pandemic period. This resulted in high rates of obesity and chronic diseases, causing physical, mental, and financial distress for families and young people. To alleviate this burden and promote a healthier future generation, it became essential for individuals to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for leading healthy lifestyles. Our objective was to support young people in developing positive habits and attitudes towards food, nutrition, and physical activity. By doing so, we aimed to equip them with the tools and information required to maintain healthy lifestyles into adulthood. Additionally, promoting healthy behaviors aligned with Positive Youth Development, as it contributed to the enhancement of health, well-being, and overall positive functioning among young individuals. Through our project, we aimed to reduce and prevent obesity by advocating for healthy lifestyles and overall well-being among youth. Our specific goals were as follows: - Collaborating with partner countries to showcase exemplary practices related to healthy lifestyles and well-being. - Encouraging the adoption of healthy eating habits. - Organizing activities focused on improving the emotional well-being of young people. - Transferring knowledge and demonstrating traditional sport games from partner countries to engage in physical activities. - Creating an online video that offers advice to youth on integrating sports and healthy lifestyle activities into their daily routines.
