Objectives

Our youth exchange aimed at empowering and enabling youth coming from disadvantaged background (especially of Roma origin) to become proud of their identity and raise multicultural awareness through strengthening international friendship and discovering new cultures. By implementing the project we wanted to help opening new horizons for disadvantaged and marginalized youth who have no international experience and practice. By bringing together Roma and non-Roma youth coming from various complicated social, economic and cultural backgrounds we aimed at raising mutual trust and understanding among youth fostering their social and communication skills. The main objectives of the project were as following: to create an international opportunity for youth from disadvantaged groups to develop multicultural competence; to develop participants’ non-formal education skills and strengthen self-reflection; to raise and strenghten their self-esteem and pride regardless their ethnic, cultural background; to foster transnational mobility of youth people; to encourage and cultivate European identity. Having been working with Roma and non-Roma youth on a daily basis, we have noticed that our youth is having very low self-esteem and self-proud impacted by the discrimination and difficult social-economic situation. Moreover, they are lacking transnational experience and European awareness due to non-existing experience in participation in international projects and no travelling abroad experience. From the perspective of our youth work practice, we found the opportunity of such youth exchange as a booster for social and cognitive change for youth coming from disadvantaged groups and having fewer opportunities to participate in the current European projects. With this project we wanted to assure social inclusion of youth with fewer possibilities and also to foster cultural diversity in the European society. Finally, the project aimed at developing international cooperation between youth organisations, sharing good practices and developing common future projects, strengthening EU-Turkey cooperation in the field of youth work.
