The project stemmed from the need to raise awareness among young people about the topic of sustainability and pollution in the fashion world. The number of garments produced annually has doubled since 2014 and estimated 92 million tons of textile waste is created annually from the fashion industry. Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned globally. In total, up to 85% of textiles go into landfills each year. Washing clothes, meanwhile, releases 500,000 tons of microfibers into the ocean each year — the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles. A 2017 report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) estimated that 35% of all microplastics — very small pieces of plastic that never biodegrade — in the ocean came from the laundering of synthetic textiles like polyester. In the end, the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of humanity's carbon emissions, more than the emission produced from all international flight and maritime shipping combined. For this reason, in the village of Antalieptė, as every year, hosted the "Zero waste festival", which had zero waste in the fashion world as its central theme for the year 2022. The theme that has been developed inspired the topic of the Youth Exchange, which did not only aim to raise awareness of the local and regional community on this issue, but has been using art as a means of expression. Photography used as a means of expression is the basis of today's society founded on social media that use images as a means of communication. However, the messages that are sent are not always positive and even more rarely raise awareness, for this reason using photography as a means of communication is the most sensible way for the public who funded themselves observing the gallery. Another problem that is worth mentioning as the trigger for the need for the creation of this project, is that art is not sufficiently "practised" by the target group that we included, or at least it is not used as a means of personal expression or means communicative. A further problem is that of verbal communication and expression of one's ideas in a non-violent way; the activities that took place, from those in groups to individual ones, helped the participants to increase their communication and creative skills, learning above all through group training activities. Training activities during this type of project are fundamental, as regards the issue of social inclusion, both from the point of view of language and from a cultural point of view. Art is revolutionary if used to speak about a topic not discussed. With our project, we wanted to encourage young people to get acquainted with the topic of sustainability, provide knowledge and skills to express an important issue through art. It is important for us to take an active part in creating a conscious and aware society in which all citizens understand the importance of not polluting our planet. Photography is an incisive way to communicate and to deliver an important message, especially in our society based on intermittent images that do not often bring positive and sensitive objectives. Ecological issues are very important to us, especially the ones that are not used to be discussed, such as the pollution generated from the fashion industries. As the population increases, so does the demand for clothing, which in most cases is made from non-natural and environmentally harmful materials; moreover, the machines that are used for mass production generate a quantity of CO2 that can no longer be neglected. Therefore, during our project we learned how art can promote and sensitise the people for a better future, just paying more attention to what we are wearing every day. The objectives of this project are: - Encourage young people to be interest in environmental challenges; - Encourage the expression through artistic, innovative and creative thinking; - Create an aware society through shared and conscious activities; The main learning tool for participants was participating in a youth exchange that aims to sensitise young people through an artistic approach. We used non-formal education methods during the group process. Young people have been encouraged to take challenges, to experience and try new experiences in nature and evaluate their experience in the group. Moreover, during the process young people learned to get feedback from other participants and use non-violent communication in the group.
