Objectives

The activities of this project are a direct result of our Erasmus+ accreditation objectives: Quality Environmental Education; An international network of non-formal youth organisations applying the principles of environmental education in their daily work with young people. And indirectly we also worked on the other two accreditation objectives: Young people as ambassadors for responsible and sustainable action; Create Youth Work Yourself at Radi Vidi Pats - to develop a strategic, purposefully planned set of activities for youth work in both form and content. We applied for this year's Erasmus+ accreditation funding with the aim of exploring alternative approaches to youth work, in this case community and/or urban gardens as platforms for youth work. During this period, we researched and visited organisations that are already doing this successfully, shared our experience of youth work activities in the community garden in Liepaja over the last two years, and provided an exchange of experience between 11 different organisations that have an interest in this topic. Why did we focus on community gardens? This activity goes along with our accreditation objectives: to promote participation and also to raise awareness of sustainability and climate change impacts among young people. The idea of a community garden is a great tool for young people to transform their own urban/community environment, thus regaining or gaining confidence in their power to influence different processes in their reality, thus encouraging participation in other areas. It also highlights the various challenges related to climate change, such as droughts and other weather-related disasters, food crises, soil pollution or plant depletion. Similarly, working in gardens, and making such environments accessible in urban areas, helps youth workers to cope with mental health challenges. Mental health has deteriorated since the pandemic among both, youth and youth workers, and gardening has a therapeutic effect. This project therefore helped to explore, understand and develop new approaches to youth work and to care for the sustainability of nature as well as people.
