We wanted to explore and chronicle the stunning scenery and the cultural diversity of Sunnmøre, situated on the West coast of Norway, through the frame of farming and outdoor activities. Sunnmøre is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets: a landscape of high mountain ranges and forests and lakes, where life beats to a different rhythm and where traditional practices of farming, husbandry and carpentry still prevail. But there is another dimension to the rural idyll: remote mountain campsites are often littered with rubbish, plastic bags and bottles pollute the rivers, and household rubbish is often simply burned without much thought for the impact on the ecosystem. Even more, ecology and sustainability are the hot topics of nowadays, with focussing on changing our lifestyle and mode of development to minimize negative impacts on the environment, we aimed to change the course. Our aim was to use outdoor activities and farming/green thinking to engage with our human impact on the natural environment, and to raise awareness about the importance of conserving both the natural and cultural richness of this special region. Another important goal of creating this project was that we often encounter situations where very few activities are planned and adapted to people with fewer opportunities such as people with disabilities, immigrants etc. The coordinator of RE:ACT Volda has a farm that he wants to turn into a place where young people, including people with lesser opportunities, can come in and engage in handicrafts. The farm will be a place to get familiar with nature, pets, and handicrafts and at the same time exercise loads of outdoor activities as it is surrounded by nature. The process of getting the farm to help other people takes time and we believe that with the implementation of this project we can bring a lot of benefits to the young people of Volda, persons with fewer opportunities and the participants on the project itself. Aims of the project The aim of the project was to promote environmental awareness, sustainability and intercultural cooperation and tolerance through reflection on our relationship with the natural world. Outdoor activities were being used as the frame for engaging with this aim. To achieve our aim the project set the following objectives: - To apply the methods and principles of experiential education to engage in a powerful outdoor learning - To develop the participants' understanding of the importance of ecological sustainability; - To reflect on the environmental situation in different parts of Europe and share the good practices for supporting each others awareness of “Green techniques.” - To introduce some ways of solution, such as creative recycling, composting and building tools in order to do so etc. - To involve youngsters in designing concrete steps, action-plan in order to make a positive impact on the environmental state in their local communities. - To promote outdoor education as an efficient and inclusive tool while working on environmental issues. - To promote a healthy lifestyle through involving the participants in outdoor educational activities implemented in nature; - To create a space for vulnerable and disabled people, where they can be involved in handicraft. - To promote intercultural dialogue between young people from different backgrounds; - To develop new tools and ideas for following up and developing existing/future projects; - Promote a healthy lifestyle and sports; - To promote intercultural dialogue between young people from different backgrounds; - To promote Erasmus + youth and its given opportunities. - To provide a series of participant-led workshops on the theme of ecology, outdoor life - To apply the methods and principles of experiential education to engage in a powerful outdoor learning experience in the form of a multi-day hike on the Høydalen mountain range - To help the farm getting to become a place where people with fewer opportunities can come and engage in handicrafts, be part of nature.
