Our project aimed to reconceptualize the values and foundational approaches within social sciences and humanities in response to the climate crisis and Europe’s "twin transition." Recognizing the pressing need for digital democracy, inclusiveness, and an innovation-driven economy, we focused on equipping academia with tools to translate research into impactful policy analysis and advocacy. This was achieved through the development of interdisciplinary resources such as the Methodology, Textbook, Cultural Studies Curriculum, and Brain Drain report, integrating SSH with STEM to foster critical thinking and practical skills. The project also sought to address challenges such as migration and labor automation, tailoring solutions to Southeast Europe while aligning with EU priorities. By embedding these deliverables into institutional frameworks and ensuring their sustainability, we created pathways for ongoing reform. This approach fosters an inclusive, resilient academic environment that bridges regional disparities and contributes to sustainable socio-economic transformation. This initiative ensures academia remains a catalyst for sustainable solutions, bridging research and policy to address regional and global challenges.
The project was initiated to address a growing disconnect between academic institutions and societal realities, which limits higher education’s role in solving complex, real-world issues. This gap has led to intellectual stagnation and insufficient innovation in key policy areas, particularly in Southeast Europe (SEE). Our consortium identified the need for an integrated model combining teaching, rigorous research, and active student engagement to build an intellectual community capable of addressing challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and democratic resilience. Aligned with the European Research Area 2030 Strategy, the project supported digitalization and green entrepreneurship while addressing the risk of SEE becoming a hub for low-skilled labor. By redefining “digital democracy” and fostering advocacy-centered curricula, it aimed to meet educational needs and build a society ready for the twin transitions of digitalization and sustainability, offering transformative solutions for the region. By addressing these gaps, the project fostered a model of education that bridges academia and society, empowering students and institutions to drive meaningful change in SEE and beyond.
