Objectives

The project motivation originated from us youth members of Sezzjoni Zghazagh Palmisti. As youth volunteers in the cultural heritage sector, we are facing challenges that are hampering not just the sustainability of our organisation, but our way of life and cultural heritage more generally. The idea is to partner up with ATIC to address these shared issues. One of the main issue we are faced with is the decreasing importance of traditional cultural heritage. Our starting point is at the core of what SZP does - volunteering to sustain cultural heritage through the village feast traditions. Unfortunately, the feast no longer holds the same importance with today’s society and with youths. While youth cultural participation is not decreasing, newer (digital) methods have become the primary means of cultural expression (Eurostat Culture statistics 2019). The “Young People & The Festa in Malta” research showed that within the feast community, young people are still very active participants, but “there are indicators that this tradition might expire [without support]. The obliteration of the feast culture will suggest that certain crafts, brass bands and socialization opportunities will go to waste” (p.19). Within this context, the projects' objectives were to hold an exchange in Galati, Romania, whereby 30 youth participants implemented a programme of activities addressing the overarching topic of “Sustaining Cultural Heritage through Youth Activism” which helped them learn and develop their skills; contribute to the youth participants’ understanding and appreciation of the importance of traditional cultural heritage, and how to preserve and develop it further. Lastly, on an organisational level, the objective was to build the capacity of our 2 youth organisations through mutual exchange of best practices, sharing of ideas, and joint learning, allowing us to innovate in our activities and attract more youths to volunteer and be active. A stronger link between us will also further develop our ability to work internationally.
